Great Journey Day 490
"Kap Arkona is one of the sunniest places in Germany" they write on their website. And what do we do? We believe it.
But we would be satisfied if we could walk through Putgarten up to the cape on dry feet. In the morning, the weather shows itself to be merciful, we wrap ourselves up in our winter weatherproof clothing and walk up to the cape once more. This time, the view is a little clearer, the clouds hide the sun and the cosy autumnal 8° Celsius make us feel autumnal.
We leave the lighthouse on the left and trudge through the undergrowth to the cliff. The stairs that we climbed down and up again years ago (phew!) are rotten, broken and partly collapsed. And, just as well, closed off.
So through prickly bushes to the next staircase. (On the way back we see the excellent spikeless hiking trail, you never stop learning). So down to the sea, we glide over pretty-looking but slippery-slippery stones, make way for chalk stones (which, by the way, are also slippery because of all the rain) and hike up the chalk cliff from below.
The 43-metre-high circular rock face is already very impressive, the sea is calm and we admire the colours of the water. The rather dark sea (yes, the Baltic Sea is a sea, we used to be told!) nibbles lightly at the chalk stone and gets some white colour. Somewhere between the dark sea and the white water, everything is nicely mixed and a beautiful play of colours is revealed.
Our little excursion backpack is filled with small pieces of driftwood and one or two small chalk stones. The Christmas decoration candle bowl will later have to make way for the Baltic Sea decoration bowl. Besides, I read that the chalk rock is excellent against wrinkles. However, we don't know whether you have to leave the chalky mess on your face or rinse it off. First of all, the stones end up on the table.
