Great Journey 🇳🇴 Day 545
With snow flurries and the weather changing by the hour (by now we have a colourful potpourri of weather and storm-warming apps on our smartphones with no real useful purpose), we set off in the morning for our dream destination: the Lofoten Islands.
For us, this group of islands is a longing thing: once to the Lofoten Islands. Something like: once to the Golden Gate Bridge, once to Machu Picchu, once to cherry blossom in Japan. Something like that.
We don't get far, a customer desperately asks for help (why is everything always so urgent?), we make ourselves comfortable in a rustic trucker pub and work like hell. At some point we drive on and look for a nice spot. The only thing that seems to be different here in Norway is the parking spaces. The roads are cleared, but car parks for hikers, simple car parks and camping sites are simply closed and not prepared for us individual travellers with the highest demands.
We drive on. In the villages: here, too, the snow is half a metre high. Should we really be standing directly on the road for the first time? It is slowly getting dark, our eyes search the roadside for driveways without nearby houses. Nothing.
Tired, a little desperate and maybe - just maybe - a little grumpy, we slowly drive on. By now we don't care about the area. Tomorrow it will probably still be there.
And then we discover it: the most romantic place of our trip so far! It goes off the road for a short while. A cleared hikers' car park on a kind of headland. Snow-covered mountains around us. Fjords and glittering ice floes. A small footpath onto an islet and peace. Absolute silence.
Learning of the day: Some gifts take a long time to arrive. But then, wow! (The only thing we couldn't celebrate today was the anticipation...)
