Great Journey Day 580
After a leisurely time in Berlin, one of those brown sightseeing signs is emblazoned on the motorway: "Ferropolis". Gerd wonders what that is supposed to be. I remember reading about concerts, motorbike rallies and other cool events there. But neither of us knows what exactly that is.

Turn signals out and leave the motorway. Maybe it's already sightseeing season or we could at least "spienzle" over the fence.

But we are lucky: the area is open, we are the only visitors and the huge things are waiting to be admired, climbed and photographed by us. Huge things?

On the 20-hectare peninsula in Lake Gremmin stand 5 steel colossi, disused open-cast mining equipment. We read about testimonies of unleashed industrial forces and gigantomaniac industrial modernity. What's really great is that we can climb some of the giants. Until today, we didn't know about the existence of the bucket-chain or caterpillar-tracked slewing excavators.

My favourite is immediately clear: Mosquito. Visually the most beautiful of the rusty iron giants, elegant despite its age. His nickname "racehorse" only becomes apparent after reading the sign.

MadMax can shovel what he wants with his 40 huge buckets. I can't help but think of our plastic shovel, which was supposed to help us out of any snowdrifts and is still lying dormant in its original packaging in Felix's "cellar". It will probably be thrown out when we get back to Switzerland.

In contrast to the huge steel sculptures of the open-cast mining industry, the mining exhibition has more of a club-self-made charm. But here, too, we find exciting and interesting things. What confuses us is that you can also get married here; the registry office reminds me more of the former GDR godfather brigade. It's good that we've got the topic of weddings out of the way.

All in all, a few fantastic, explorative, exciting and mega-cool hours here on the grounds of the so-called "Eisenstadt".
