Greece - Monemvasia, a journey through time and a hit right in the heart

In the south-east of the Peloponnese lies Monemvasia, an enchanted place that takes us back to a time long gone. An imposing fortress sits enthroned off the coast, connected to the mainland by a narrow path. Monemvasia is also called Malvasia, "Gibraltar of the East" or "The Rock".

After two days of just staring at the rocks from the mainland, we are drawn to the city today in beautiful weather. We cross the narrow causeway, park in front of the town gate and stroll off.

The first thing we have to say is that Monemvasia is a cat city. And whose heart does that gladden the most? That's right, my husband's. With his bag of brekkies he woos all the kittens on the island, they show themselves friendly, let themselves be stroked and everyone is happy.

The fairytale appearance of Monemvasia is shaped by the steep island on which it was built, with a cliff almost 300 metres high and almost two kilometres long. The colours of the rock give the place a picturesque atmosphere.

When we want to climb the rock, we unfortunately (or thank God?) find out that the stairs are closed until 3 pm due to construction work. We don't want to stay in town that long, so we drink another Greek coffee, feed a few more kittens and stroll through town.

The walk through the narrow alleys, along the cobbled paths is like a walk through times gone by, when life was different. We watch a furniture maker who has to carry his furniture in individual parts through the narrow alleys. Kitchen cupboard complete? Not a chance!

Monemvasia, wow, we have to say - and we think long and hard - we have never seen such a charming and beautiful city with such a magical appeal.

Merci for "travelling with us

We are thinking about taking another break from travelling in the summer and visiting our families in Germany and Switzerland. One of the ideas is to organise a Lecture about our long journey to the Persian Gulf to prepare. If you would like to, what would interest you the most? We will also tell stories here that don't find a place here on the blog. We're thinking of the Bern and Berlin area - simply because we have family there. But other places are also conceivable. Feel free to write to us.

Do you think our travel experiences might be of interest to others? Then you can share the Share post quietly. By e-mail or however you want to do it.

In addition, if you haven't already done so, you can use our Newsletter subscribe. Here you will receive all our experiences in your mailbox whenever we publish something new or once a week on Fridays: live-pur.ch/newsletter

We are also very happy to hear your views, your tips or your questions. Just comment on the post!

Hello dear ones,
Wow, the photos create such a great atmosphere, really great! I think it's very difficult to get this right in pictures, but you've done a great job!
Thank you so much, it brightened up our Easter breakfast!

Kind regards
Dirk
