Iran - Visiting friends & the Ali Sadr Cave

Iran - Visiting friends & the Ali Sadr Cave

We have been in contact with Sodeeh and Majid from Tehran since our first meeting in the Persian Gulf in close contact. They ask us where we're going, give us tips and I can ask them anything that's on my mind. All the things that you don't really understand in foreign countries are covered in our WhatsApp chats. That's just great!

About Travelling friendships I've already written about this, but something very special is developing here. At some point, Sodeeh cautiously asks us if they can join us for a bit on their weekends off. Of course, we are very happy to see them again.

Perhaps I need to expand a little here: Meeting new people again and again, getting to know them, asking the same questions again and again and yes, also trying out again and again whether you fit together. The language barrier is often really exhausting. Yes, smiles and the language of hands are wonderful, but when travelling for longer periods of time, it's nice to make a little progress linguistically too.

Sodeeh speaks wonderful English, I'm always amazed at her vocabulary (and start my Duolingo again right away, my English is still terrible in my perception). So we write to her that we need some peace and quiet, won't be driving much and just want to have a look at the one colourful cave. If you want to come with us, we'd love to.

They take a 5-hour car journey one morning, travelling across the country to visit us. We meet in the morning, drink tea together and visit a beautiful, colourful cave. The visit to this cave drags on, we have completely forgotten that today is the end of Ramazan and that the whole of Iran is off. Everyone packs up their kettles, rugs and the whole family and sets off. Of course it's full!

We queue comfortably for two hours and then spend another hour in small boats sailing through one of the most beautiful caves we have ever seen.

Gerd is still not quite fit, the caves are beautiful, but still: the best thing of all is the time with our friends. We learn so much about each other's lives and cultures in our conversations. We can ask anything. About politics, society, women, religion, the best dates. We talk about our travels, about the greatest luxury we allow ourselves: having no or at least hardly any appointments. And we drink tea, eat and laugh a lot together.

Simply beautiful.

Oh, there's nothing to say about the caves. I just didn't listen to what we were told there. Let the pictures speak for themselves.
