Iran - Salt Lake & Hayghar Canyon

Iran - Salt Lake & Hayghar Canyon

As much as we long for nature, we get it. The Hayghar Canyon, also known as the Grand Canyon of the Middle East, is famous for its unique geological formations. Before that, we drive past the famous pink-coloured salt lake, which doesn't impress us at all and where we almost get stuck... So on we go!

In a remote area, which we drive through in our "new expedition vehicle", we admire the canyon with its deep gorges, steep rock faces and thousands of hairpin bends. The region is also said to be characterised by a rich history and culture, but somehow we don't notice any of this.

However, the geological layers tell the story of the earth over millions of years and provide an insight into the forces of nature that have shaped this landscape. The different colours of the rock layers, from deep red to soft beige tones, offer a spectacular visual experience, especially at sunset, which we are experiencing here today.

This would actually be the perfect place to stay for a few days. If it wasn't Sunday evening and we needed somewhere with internet for our office day tomorrow. Too bad, chocolate, because we have absolutely no reception here in the middle of nowhere. That's some stupid scheduling. And the only thing we really need to work is internet reception two days a week.

Well, we have no choice but to drive a little further and perhaps visit the canyon again at a later date. Because one thing is clear: this one has what it takes to rival the Grand Canyon in the USA! (Incidentally, we'll be saying that a lot in southern Iran!)

But we don't need to moan as we continue our journey: The landscape before and after the canyon is at least as impressive.

Merci for "travelling with us

We are thinking about taking another break from travelling in the summer and visiting our families in Germany and Switzerland. One of the ideas is to organise a Lecture about our long journey to the Persian Gulf to prepare. If you would like to, what would interest you the most? We will also tell stories here that don't find a place here on the blog. We're thinking of the Bern and Berlin area - simply because we have family there. But other places are also conceivable. Feel free to write to us.

Do you think our travel experiences might be of interest to others? Then you can share the Share post quietly. By e-mail or however you want to do it.

In addition, if you haven't already done so, you can use our Newsletter subscribe. Here you will receive all our experiences in your mailbox whenever we publish something new or once a week on Fridays: live-pur.ch/newsletter

We are also very happy to hear your views, your tips or your questions. Just comment on the post!
