Slovakia - Beautiful Chopok and we trudge through the fog

Actually, it's supposed to be a nice hike. Actually. If you want to see right away how beautiful such a hike can be, please go this way: https://comewithus2.com/wander-tipp-in-der-niederen-tatra-mt-chopok/

But now to us: We set off, the mountain is high, but we are rather downhill runners. So we take the Gondeli in beautiful weather, bright sunshine and in the best of moods, look forward to a good breakfast up in the Bergbeizli and experience two disappointments at once: The Chopok is hidden in the fog and there is no breakfast in the restaurant. Coffee yes, but nothing to nibble on.

So we reach into the rucksack and start eating. Our food for the day is halved, the rucksack lighter and highly motivated, we now hike along the ridge. The view? Hm, well, I can just make out the few metres in front of me, Gerd in his light jacket as well, and every now and then a small sun hole with mountains to the north.

The southern side of the Low Tatras, yes, it is supposed to be so beautiful. We have to believe it, but we won't see it today.

After about an hour of ridge walking (I hoped until the end that the clouds would disappear) we turn off and the descent begins. Now the path becomes clearer (the clouds remain behind the ridge, the sun shines in front of us from time to time), but also much steeper and above all stonier!

So we stumble from rock to rock, my walking sticks do a good job of supporting us, and we get deeper and deeper. For lack of provisions, the breaks are the blueberries at the side of the path, but there are lots of them!

After about halfway, the trail changes character: from zigzagging and steep descents, we now walk through a fairytale world with watercourses sometimes to the right, sometimes to the left and sometimes in the middle of the trail. With wet feet and wobbly legs (over 1000 metres of altitude downhill), we reach a clearing that virtually invites us to take a rest.

We snack on the leftovers from our backpacks and reach the long-awaited lake, just a few hundred metres from the car park and the restaurant of the valley station. Here we munch on yeast dumplings with blueberry filling and chocolate sauce (aha, strange mixture, but just my thing!) and I almost said we fall into bed dead tired.

But unfortunately there is no falling, the legs ache and the first sore muscles make themselves felt: So "falling into bed" feels more like climbing a mountain again.

Yes, we can hike. We just have to work on our fitness...

Merci for "travelling with us

We are thinking about taking another break from travelling in the summer and visiting our families in Germany and Switzerland. One of the ideas is to organise a Lecture about our long journey to the Persian Gulf to prepare. If you would like to, what would interest you the most? We will also tell stories here that don't find a place here on the blog. We're thinking of the Bern and Berlin area - simply because we have family there. But other places are also conceivable. Feel free to write to us.

Do you think our travel experiences might be of interest to others? Then you can share the Share post quietly. By e-mail or however you want to do it.

In addition, if you haven't already done so, you can use our Newsletter subscribe. Here you will receive all our experiences in your mailbox whenever we publish something new or once a week on Fridays: live-pur.ch/newsletter

We are also very happy to hear your views, your tips or your questions. Just comment on the post!
