Italy - Vatican Museum all to ourselves

01 November 2020

Great Journey 🏍🏍 Day 59

After school we go to the Vatican again. The Vatican Museums and the Sistine Chapel arouse our curiosity.

We arrive only 10 minutes from our school. We are the only ones at the ticket office. Buy our ticket for now. We are the only ones at the security check. Are so incredibly alone in the museum corridors. Sometimes Gerd says I'll wait until the one man goes out of the picture for a moment. We can't believe how empty the museums are.

And then it overwhelms us. This diversity of beauty, the mass of exhibits. The museums are simply magnificent. Only here do we feel what people can really create when they are allowed to work artistically.
We stop, marvel, enjoy and are very impressed. I would love to have a long explanation for each exhibit, but I don't want to invest the next few years in it. So we just look at the exhibits.

At some point we reach the geographical section, huge drawn maps adorn the walls. Here alone we spend what feels like an eternity. And we realise that it's good to travel through Italy slowly. This way we recognise many places, dream ourselves away to Sicily or up into the mountains again.

At some point I notice that nothing works any more. Once again, our eyes can't take in anything. But the Sistine Chapel is still ahead of us. After 3 hours, the highlight is supposed to come. We enter, interestingly there are actually a lot of people here and a lot of "museum police". Please adjust your mask here, please don't take photos, no, don't put your backpack on the floor, no, don't sit down, just stand!
The paintings on the ceilings and walls are really very impressive. We would love to just lie down on the cool stone floor and look up.

A little later we leave the museums, deeply impressed, and sit next to each other in silence in the Vatican gardens. Nibbling our mundane biscuits and our minds racing. So much beauty. And that we are allowed to look at it. Once again, we are simply grateful.
