With the sun dripping and the road shining, I leave Batumi very early, only to find myself waiting at the Georgian-Turkish border 20 kilometres later. Because, oh surprise, private vehicles are only checked out from 10 am.
I while away the waiting time in the drizzle while I talk to Heike on the phone (my last Georgian data volume is being used up). But at some point something stirs in the ticket office: it's time to go. It's a bit strange, because I'm crossing the border with Malou, who is registered in Heike's name. But I have all the papers together (thanks again to Silke and Jan for the tip about the power of attorney and for contacting the notary in Tbilisi), a few controls, a few stamps later and I'm in the land of smiling people, happy "waving to me" and "Çay!
At the next petrol station I meet two Frenchmen who want to reach Georgia today on their motorbikes. Hopefully the weather will be better than today! And while we are chatting like this, a little cat joins us, jumps on my lap and I could have stayed right here.
But since daily stages of about 25 kilometres would only cause trouble at home, I decide to drive on (I didn't take the rain with me across the border): it's once again the dream road 950 via Artvin into the mountains, only to end up in Bayburt in the evening. (By the way, that wasn't planned, but this one turn-off didn't want to show up at first and then it was probably gone altogether).
Oh, what a beautiful day of riding. Lots of bends, a wonderful rough area, maybe I rode a bit faster than usual. After 7 hours in the saddle, my backside and I are happy about the end of the day's riding. Back at the hotel, I think about what would be the best route through Turkey and promptly remember that Cappadocia was quite nice after all. So why not go there again? But who knows, plans are not really our hobby.
