Great Journey 🏍 Day 343
After our "hotel room holiday" we are going to the Black Sea. On day 280, exactly 63 days ago, we left the Black Sea in Bulgaria to cruise across Turkey.
Here in north-eastern Turkey, in the Pontic Mountains, we pass through tea-growing areas that remind us of Sri Lanka. The mountains are lush green. The clouds hang romantically in the mountain peaks, any moment we expect rain. There is a strange smell in the air, a bit like opening a packet of black tea.
Between the rows of tea plants we see collectors. Along the road are large trucks loading up the tea. 120,000 tonnes of tea are consumed by the people of Turkey for their countless tea breaks. It is estimated that Turkey has the largest tea consumption per person in the world. And for the year 2021, we helped boost the statistics, for sure!
While we have to adjust to the temperature (from 40 to 28 degrees, but humidity like after a sauna infusion!) we treat ourselves to a tea "from here". We take it easy and look forward to the next country: Georgia.
