"Do you need some mountain pictures again?" I read on my mobile. My girlfriend could also have asked if I felt like going on a trip. Or whether I need a change of pace from work.
To all these questions there is only one answer: "Yes, of course!"
And already we arrange to meet for another "Expedition Alpenpanorama". We meet at the station car park and neither she nor I have any idea where the path should take us. Only one thing is clear: we have to get up high.
Because autumn brings us fog, clouds and a pretty grey-in-grey monotony in the Murten Seeland and Bernbiet. A look at the Swiss webcams shows: above 2000 metres it looks sunny. So let's get up there!
It's supposed to be a train ride. The cogwheel railway takes us up to the Schynige Platte in 52 minutes. Here I learn a new Swiss word: "Schnaaggi-Bahn". In other words, a railway that crawls along so slowly. The good thing about this Schnaaggi-Bahn is that we find plenty of time to update each other, but also to enjoy the view of the lakes and the increasingly thick fog. And then, suddenly, it gets brighter.
A loud "Ah!" and "Oh!" goes through the romantic wooden compartment, we end the cloud passage and look with blinking eyes into the sun! Below us the clouds, spread out like candy floss, above us the mountain panorama with freshly powdered Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau, and as we get off, alphorn players with a welcome greeting. (So I stopped myself from singing "Above the clouds").
A little later we are even allowed to pose with the alphorns, but we spare the people present the sound. Because: on the other side of the photo, quite a few people are sitting on the panorama terrace and certainly only want one thing: peace and quiet from incompetent first-time alphorn blowers.
If that's not a magical start to a beautiful day of hiking!
