No sooner have we arrived in cosy mode than we are called to deck 9: there is something pretty to see. Well, not that we have seen anything unattractive in Norway so far...
We pass a very special lighthouse. The Kjeungskjær Fyr. The lighthouse, an octagonal one, stands on a reef that overflows at high tide. In 1880, the beacon was lit for the first time in the affectionately named "Red Sailor".
What is exciting is that the lighthouse was inhabited, always with families with children. People probably didn't say "Go out and play in the garden" very often. But the kids could fish out of the children's room window. Who can say that about themselves?
It was not until 1987 that the beacon was automated, which meant that it no longer required on-site supervision and the lighthouse keeper and his family could move ashore again.
If I understood correctly, you can rent the lighthouse for holidays. Once again, a place to write books or read. A bit lonely perhaps, but if you are looking for peace and quiet and like the wind, why not?
We wrap ourselves up in our thick jackets and look at the tower from deck 9 of the Trollfjord. Very slowly, the Kjeungskjær Fyr glides past us, the cameras of all the other passengers are snapping away, music comes from the loudspeakers for the first time and we think that the Hurtigruten was a fantastic idea of ours.
