Great Journey 🏍 Day 354
Pushkin writes "The Caucasus took us into its sanctuary. We heard a muffled roar and saw the Terek. The deeper we penetrated into the mountains, the narrower the gorge became. The harried Terek roared, throwing its turbid waves against the steep rocks that barred its way. I walked and stopped every moment, deeply impressed by the sinister charm of nature. I could compare the picture that presented itself to me with nothing else."

While I'm still reading Pushkin's lines, our jeep rumbles the last 13 kilometres of the Georgian Army Road through the Darial Gorge to the Russian border. The gorge is unique. The rocks are huge. The river doesn't roar, today it only ripples very quietly. And the jeep driver is more annoyed about the much too narrow road, the much too long queues of trucks and the poor quality of the road surface.

He wants a new road, without border truck congestion. He wants a modern Georgia. He is dissatisfied and wants to belong to the EU sooner rather than later.

We ask him what exactly should be changed, what are the issues that need to be renewed. What he would like to see. What would be best for politics to tackle first. He looks at us. And doesn't know. He has never thought about it before. It should simply get better.

We can understand him. For so many years, the countries of the former Soviet Union were simply determined, dictated. And now people are supposed to be able to wish, even dream? You have to learn that first.

Nevertheless, many years have passed, the boys have never been to the Soviet Union. And just looking back will probably not help anyone. Let us wish this generation that they can dream, that they can formulate their wishes and that some of these ideas become reality.
