Great Journey 🥾 Day 386
🇨🇭Heike
The Devil's Bridge has always been a highlight on the way to the Gotthard. The Reuss flows rushing down here through the Schöllenen Gorge.

In the past, when there was no developed cantonal road and there were no motorbikes and motorhomes jamming up the Gotthard Pass, the journey here was very arduous. Valuable goods such as oils and spices were brought over the Alps to the north on donkeys.

If the legend is to be believed, one exciting fact actually stands out: it was built by the devil. He promised to build the bridge and in return he would get the soul of the first person to cross the bridge. After the bridge was built, the cunning people of Uri sent a billy goat across the bridge. The devil was very angry about this trick and fetched a stone as high as a house with which he wanted to break the bridge. But he met a pious woman who carved a cross on the stone. The devil was so confused by the sign of God that he missed the bridge when he threw the stone. The stone fell down the entire Schöllenen Gorge to below the village of Göschenen.
