Great Journey 🏍 Day 267
On the way back south we visit the small rock monastery of Aladzha. The caves in the limestone rocks were already inhabited in the 4th and 5th centuries. In the 12th century, hermits enlarged the niches and transformed the
them to a rock monastery with an ossuary (whatever that is supposed to be).

At some point it was forgotten, at another point it wasn't, and now we are standing here marvelling at the small paths, 2 churches, a crypt, a kitchen and living quarters, all hewn into the rock. I wouldn't want to live here forever, somehow it's strange why they hammer holes into the rock. But I'm not made for monastic life, I think.

If you drive north from Varna, you can take 20 minutes to get there. From the upper floor you even have a beautiful view of the sea.
