Great Journey Day 627

great journey day 627 canterbury. there was something... i get my knowledge from historical schmoek

Canterbury. There was something... I get my knowledge from historical books about old England. But at least I remember the cathedral (England's church centre?), its attraction for pilgrims and also the murder of Thomas Becket.

When we reach the entrance to Canterbury, completely unplanned, I am keen to see the cathedral. Gerd does too, when I remind him that he too has read Ken Follet's novels and can now see with his own eyes what he read back then.

We stroll through the sugary city, leave the rain behind and wonder. All the people here are dressed so beautifully. Not just beautiful, more like gorgeous, festive, prom-like. The ladies stumble through the puddles in high heels, the brightly polished patent leather shoes of the men slide over the soaking wet cobblestones.

And then, as we turn towards Canterbury Cathedral, we see them: the many graduates. Everywhere, black gowns flutter on beaming people, different coloured shoulder parts refer to the degree (I asked a young woman who proudly told me that she had just achieved a Master's degree) and hats fly. But these are probably only flying for the photos. And everywhere the elegantly dressed friends and families are whirling around. Now everything becomes clear to us.

We are happy for the graduates, but the cathedral is off-limits to us because of the festivities. Only in the cloisters can we stroll. Here, however, the graduates wait excitedly while the guests are seated in the church.

No matter, we allow them their special moment and then stroll through the town, buy new pants and eat croque or something in a French bistro. Just what you do when you come to a city.
