Grand Tour - Ireland - Day 742

Grand Tour - Ireland - Day 742

Dublin. This is where we started our trip to Ireland. And this is also where it will end. At the beginning we were in love with Dublin. Then the many and wonderful experiences in Ireland "discoloured" the memory of Dublin. It faded behind so many impressions.

By now we know: Nothing is more beautiful or less beautiful. Everything is just fine the way it is. We are looking forward to Dublin.

We get a bit of a damper when we spend more than an hour looking for a parking space. We drive through the city with Felix, all the parking spaces, even the paid ones (and there are many and very expensive ones!) are occupied. Our long boat does not fit into the small spaces and we are visibly annoyed for the first time after 6 weeks of endless nature in Ireland.

And we have an appointment: We have tickets for the libraries for 2 pm, we want to see the Book of Kells. The hand of the clock keeps turning relentlessly, time is running out. There is no time left for a lunch break.

At some point, we had almost given up hope, Gerd finds a parking space at Felix-length, we quickly buy a parking ticket (and spend a large part of our daily budget!) and rush to the library.

Here we are surprised by an exhibition on the former techniques of our industry: letterpress, calligraphy, duplication and bookbinding. A bit of publishing "in the old days".

This "Book of Kells" is the most famous of the medieval manuscripts of the four Gospels of the New Testament. Aha. Famous for the complexity, detail and magnificence of the illustrations. It is assumed that the book was created as a showpiece for the altar and not for everyday use, as more attention was obviously paid to the artwork than to the text.

But let's face it: the book fades the moment we enter the library. While we are definitely not alone here, we spend a nice time and look at every shelf. We are not sure what impresses us more: the collection of old books, the rooms themselves or the whole atmosphere. We imagine spending a longer, solitary time here and browsing through all the books (which we are not allowed to touch, of course, but dreaming of them is not forbidden!).

Merci for "travelling with us

We are thinking about taking another break from travelling in the summer and visiting our families in Germany and Switzerland. One of the ideas is to organise a Lecture about our long journey to the Persian Gulf to prepare. If you would like to, what would interest you the most? We will also tell stories here that don't find a place here on the blog. We're thinking of the Bern and Berlin area - simply because we have family there. But other places are also conceivable. Feel free to write to us.

Do you think our travel experiences might be of interest to others? Then you can share the Share post quietly. By e-mail or however you want to do it.

In addition, if you haven't already done so, you can use our Newsletter subscribe. Here you will receive all our experiences in your mailbox whenever we publish something new or once a week on Fridays: live-pur.ch/newsletter

We are also very happy to hear your views, your tips or your questions. Just comment on the post!
