Greece - on the road to the north

28 April 2021

Great Journey 🏍 Day 237
We drive along the shore road, "the old road", in the direction of Athens, but turn off into the mountains beforehand. We save Athens for later, now we want to go north.

And once again we marvel at how many mountains Greece has to offer. It is a true paradise of curves for us. Of course, we don't know if it would be as empty here in the summer months and without Covid.

Whenever we meet a truck or a car, we honk, wave, greet and smile. Even when we take a short break at the side of the road, I hit the bushes again, Gerd runs back and forth on the phone (he always does that when he's on the phone), a Greek stops to ask if we need help. We are thrilled.

The area here fascinates us, the mountains are not as high as at home, and rocky-red to boot. The road winds up and down curve after curve through villages, small towns and around almost every single mountain. In the valleys, the rape blossoms bright yellow and the thermometer climbs to 23 degrees.

As there are no restaurants or cafés open, we look out for a break in the "male congregation". If there are at least two or three standing together, there is sure to be something to nibble on. And so it is, we find something like a grain shop, where we take a break sitting on an old desk.
