Great Journey 🇨🇭 Day 465
Appenzell. Or as they affectionately say here: Appezöll.

The small Swiss canton (actually there are two: Appenzell Innerrhoden and Appenzell Ausserrhoden) has managed to attract some prejudices. They are said to prefer hiking naked (we haven't seen that yet), not to be the tallest (body size!) or to be a bit stubborn. They also took a lot of time to give women their right to vote. One prejudice, however, we can turn into a clear verdict: It's magical!

And: the Appenzell region is definitely very traditional. We stroll through the wintry cantonal capital and drop by open workshops. The workshops are always open here on Thursday evenings.

Fascinating. Here we are allowed to observe how the traditional Appenzell belts are shod, we drop in on a violin-making workshop and a leather bag manufacture. We are allowed to admire how pottery is made and in a pewter workshop we speak with a voice that is hidden somewhere behind the workbench and wall and was invisible to us at first.

It's an evening entirely to our taste. And at the end we buy a tiny turned Christmas decoration hanging from a carving shop. For the cosiness. And anyway.
