Great Journey 🇸🇪 Day 503
The story goes that a large butterfly flew over Sweden. However, when it came to the Baltic Sea, its beautiful wings came loose in too strong a wind and it fell into the water. Here it remained, petrified and from then on it was possible to walk on the island of Öland.
So, now it is also clear how islands are created.
We drive on the (how could it be otherwise?) longest bridge in Sweden - something over 6 kilometres long - across to Butterfly Body House.
The view can wander far and wide, but the island doesn't have much in the way of mountains. We plan to spend a few days here, because 136 km of the island need to be explored. The tourist office alone is worth a visit. The small, beautiful and tasteful souvenirs alone would be nice to have. But the deal was: souvenirs everywhere or the sewing machine. My Bernina won!
After the first quiet night directly on the western shore of the Baltic Sea, we walk through slippery mud (what's up with the Swedish winter now?) and along stone cliffs. We have breakfast outside for the first time (attention: selfie artists at work, mobile phone had to hang in the undergrowth!) and slowly stroll off to explore the island.
Bornholm, which according to the travel guide is lively, is in deepest winter sleep. Instead of summer street cafés, we find a single vintage bakery. And here, vintage is the name of the game: everything was created sometime in the late 50s, the furnishings, the cash register system and the group of regulars.
The gentlemen are amazed: tourists at this time of year. But then we score points because we eat THE pastry of the season: a kind of Berliner (pancake, doughnut, call it what you will) with lots of almonds and cream inside. We learn that this is probably what you eat now, after all, you've had enough of all the Christmas sweets. Aha, it has calories for several meals. We would have defined "enough of sweets" differently now.
