Iran - The silence of the mountains of Hamadan

Iran - The silence of the mountains of Hamadan

The longing grows ever greater, the longing for peace and quiet. So we drive for kilometres through the countryside, once again through the magnificent mountain scenery that we had already seen on the Train journey have enjoyed. We take the dual carriageway, which doesn't really allow fast driving, but by Iranian standards we make rapid progress.

Our thoughts wander, we remember. As we talk, we realise that it's too much, that we can't take anything in anymore. We get the families and the stories mixed up and hardly remember where we were three days ago.

And find only one word for our journey in Iran: intensive.

So I take Gerd into the mountains. The thermometer easily drops to 15 degrees, it's refreshingly cool. We find peace and quiet in a cosy, almost secluded spot. I sit in the warming sun and knit my daily portion of meditation and we wind down. Gerd is slowly catching a little cold, which is wonderful! Now that we're in the mountains.

Not much happens for days on end. On Tuesday evening after work, we take a walk into the village, see that the cable car is still going up the mountain and decide to go on a little mountain hike at our leisure. Maybe there's a nice café at the top. We don't give up hope of finding nice cafés and are once again taught that it's better to travel without expectations.

Once we reach the top, we take a tour, the lifts further up are of course already closed, it's low season. Or never-again season, we don't know exactly. There's no sign of a café or any other service. So half an hour later, we're back in the Gondeli and let the lift take us down. And make ourselves comfortable again: at Café Felix.

Of course, we are also approached here by curious and interested people, but this time they might realise that we can't do any more and need some rest. So we can regenerate wonderfully and plan the next travel steps. And yes, we are actively listening to the news again, because the situation here seems to be getting worse and we want to have thought through all eventualities. We (and our family at home) know that we could leave the country at any time within a day. But of course we don't know if that's necessary. Neither at this point in time at the beginning of April 2024, nor today, in hindsight.
