129 - Bulgaria has it with the devil - Great Journey

Great Journey 🏍 Day 249
"The Bulgarians" have it out with the devil!
The "Dyavolski Most", the Devil's Bridge in the south of Bulgaria, in the Rhodope Mountains, has already been around for a few days, more than 500 years to be exact.

And why Devil's Bridge? Dimitar, the builder of the bridge, built it from 1515 to 1518. His wife died during its construction, and it is said that her spirit is still trapped in the bridge. After sunset, when the shadows are at ease, she comes out and does her diabolical mischief. (Or something like that, we haven't checked!)

It was good that we were there during the day. We had to kürvelen a right stretch of Ruppel road, the cars had to park much further up, but we were allowed to hobble almost to the end of the road. An excavator then spontaneously cleared the road for us (landslide!) and we continued.

Down at the bridge we meet two biker couples (we have already seen the monkeys standing) and of course immediately start talking. (It is so nice in Bulgaria that many people here speak English.) We throw off our clothes - it is getting very hot here - and they take care of it while we go to admire the bridge.

And then the question about the route, of course. We take out our paper map, get tips and then we put a few dots on the map again. And we get a new tip: Go to the sea as soon as possible while it's not yet high season. You can do the mountains and everything else later, when the Bulgarian guests are lying towel to towel on the Black Sea. That sounds like a plan!

But whether we ever follow a plan? I don't know. We will see.
