Switzerland - Off to Graubünden

Switzerland - Off to Graubünden

"And? Where are we going?" "To Graubünden? To Valposchiavo?"

I have no idea where Valposchiavo is. Never heard of it. And Graubünden is huge. It's the biggest canton. So compared to other cantons and tiny Switzerland. Every valley has its charm, so I guess every valley and every mountain also has its own marketing department.

During my research, I get lost in all the valleys of Graubünden. The anticipation of the Grisons nut cake alone sweetens my disorientation. And the memory of the mega-funny commercials of the two ibexes Gian and Giachen. If you want to have a look, please click here: https://www.graubuenden.ch/de/steinboecke-gian-giachen.

Okay, it's still the same: My girlfriend and I are heading to Valposchiavo, the valley at the very tip of Switzerland. You can't go any further from Bern without leaving the country...

It's clear that we can't cover this huge distance in one day. The route is nicely piecemeal. Since I leave my favourite driver at home in his old "nursery", I have to steer our Felix over the passes myself. Which, as my girlfriend confirms, I manage quite well.

So we roll out of the yard at well over 30 degrees on a Sunday afternoon, fill up with water, empty the grey water tank and off we go. Past the lakes of Thun and Brienz, over the small training mountain between Meiringen and Innertkirchen.

And then our Felix pushes himself with us along the Gadmerdolomites, an incredibly beautiful rock formation, up to the Susten Pass. Curve after curve, my co-driver shouts: "Stop, I want to take pictures!" Not that we've never been here before. Not that we don't already have countless photos of this area on our hard drive. But hey, not today's yet!

Halfway along the route it comes: the longing for the start of the holiday, a break and "Aperöle", as they say and celebrate here! Right in a steep bend it suits us quite well, here we have a first toast to the coming days in a small mountain tavern!

Now it's time to make plans. Where do we sleep tonight? High up on the pass? On the side of the road? "Over there" in the canton of Uri? "I want to sleep in a dream spot, you always showed us such great places on your lecture!" Yeah, no, it's clear! Because it's always so easy to plan.

I do my best, order the most beautiful of all places at Stellplatz-Bestell-Universum and hope for the best. And the best does come. We are thrilled: romantically surrounded by alpine herbs, colourful mountain flowers and a babbling mountain stream, we find our dream spot behind rocks not far from the road. "Well, are you happy now?"

We enjoy the sun, eat in our alpine front garden and enjoy the last rays of sun before the pleasant coolness of the river rises and we crawl into bed. This, however, is always a fun endeavour, as neither of us is elegant enough to climb over the other without hurting ourselves. But that's part of the camping holiday! And laughing at ourselves as well!
