Spain - Over or through the Gotthard?

Over or through the Gotthard?

Although we had great beds, we couldn't really sleep well. Maybe it was because of the trains that went past our youth hostel until late in the evening. Who knows. Or the full bellies that had to be digested first.

We have breakfast at the youth hostel, which was even included, and then we set off in the direction of Lucerne. We briefly consider whether to drive through or over the Gotthard. But it quickly becomes clear that going over the Gotthard will be pure pleasure. We quickly pick out gloves, scarves and long-sleeved, warmer clothes and off we go. While it's already almost 30 degrees in Bellinzona, it's about 11 degrees on the Gotthard. Gerd drives the old Gotthard route for a while, but then we take the new pass road and rush up the mountain over many bends. At the top we meet an incredible number of motorcyclists. In such good weather, they are all drawn out into the sun, the mountains and the winding roads.

A short break to warm up with an espresso and then we continue down towards Lake Lucerne. The colour impresses us, as do the temperatures. The sun is shining and we enjoy a few wonderful hours with our son right by the lake. We tell him about our holidays, he tells us about his first time at school and his apprenticeship. It is a wonderful time with him and we drive home over the Brünig in a very happy mood. We pass the lakes of Brienz and Thun and then we are home.

We are a well-rehearsed team by now and quickly unpack all our things and put the first clothes in the washing machine. We put everything away, clean the suitcases and leave them in the cellar. And last but not least, we take out the pesto jars we brought with us from Genoa and make ourselves a wonderful, huge portion of pasta pesto genovese to round off the holiday. And are happy.
